An Excellent Medley
'An Excellent Medley - which you may admire without offence For each line speaks a contrary sense'

View full details - including track listing and listen to selected clips.

Named after a 1615 ballad, this programme contains music from the Tudor and Jacobean periods, including a medley of lutesongs, broadside ballads, theatre songs, madrigals, consort songs, divisions, masque music, dances and a penitential psalm. As ever, it is a collection of music that we take delight in and hope you do too – we make no excuse for the jumble!

Christmas music in Shakespeare's England
Recorded at St Johns Wood Parish Church, 23-24 October 2006

View full details - including track listing, sleeve notes, and lyrics.

'Books of Christmas carols were printed throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. These editions usually lack melodies to go with the words although the indication ‘to the tune of’ is sometimes printed at the top of the carol. The word ‘carol’ probably comes from the medieval Latin ‘carula’ which has interchangeable meanings of a round dance or a song and as such it is fitting that so many carols may be set to popular dance and ballad tunes. We begin then with a medley of such tunes, all with Christmas associations...'
